- Redness
- Irritation
- Burning or stinging
- Increased skin sensitivity
- Damage to the skin’s natural moisture barrier
People with sensitive skin, eczema, rosacea, or very dry skin should generally avoid using baking soda on the face.
A Safer DIY Method
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons water or plain yogurt
Instructions
- Mix the ingredients into a smooth paste.
- Apply a very thin layer to clean skin, avoiding the eyes and lips.
- Leave it on for no longer than 1 minute.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Pat the skin dry.
- Immediately apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer.
Use this no more than once every 2–4 weeks, if your skin tolerates it.
Always Do a Patch Test
Before applying any homemade skincare treatment:
- Apply a small amount behind your ear or on your inner forearm.
- Wait 24 hours.
- If redness, itching, or burning develops, do not use it on your face.
