Garlic and Salt for Teeth Whitening: Does It Really Work

Garlic and salt are common kitchen staples that are sometimes promoted as a natural way to whiten teeth and improve oral health. While garlic contains natural compounds with antibacterial properties, and salt has long been used in homemade mouth rinses, there is no scientific evidence that brushing your teeth with a garlic-and-salt mixture safely whitens teeth. In fact, this DIY remedy may do more harm than good.

Here’s what you should know before trying it.

Can Garlic Whiten Teeth?

No.

Garlic contains a sulfur compound called allicin, which has natural antimicrobial properties. It may help reduce certain oral bacteria in laboratory studies, but it does not remove tooth stains or whiten enamel.

Garlic also has drawbacks when applied directly to the mouth:

  • Strong odor
  • Possible irritation of the gums
  • Burning sensation if left on soft tissues
  • Risk of mouth sores in sensitive individuals

Does Salt Make Teeth Whiter?

Not really.

Salt is mildly abrasive and can help remove some surface debris, but it cannot change the natural color of your teeth or remove deep stains.

Using coarse salt frequently may:

  • Scratch tooth enamel
  • Irritate the gums
  • Increase tooth sensitivity over time
