Classic Homemade White Bread

Nothing beats the smell of freshly baked bread filling your kitchen. This soft and fluffy homemade white bread is perfect for sandwiches, toast, or simply enjoying warm with butter.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm water
  • 2¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a large bowl, combine the warm water, warm milk, sugar, and yeast.

Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2: Make the Dough

Add the softened butter and salt.

Gradually mix in the flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.

Step 3: Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.

Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 4: First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.

Cover with a clean towel.

Let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 5: Shape the Loaves

Punch down the dough.

Divide it into two equal portions.

Shape each portion into a loaf and place into greased loaf pans.

Step 6: Second Rise

Cover the pans with a towel.

Allow the dough to rise for 30–45 minutes until it rises above the rim of the pans.

Step 7: Brush and Bake

Brush the tops lightly with melted butter.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 8: Cool

Remove from the oven and let cool in the pans for 10 minutes.

Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
