Classic Vanilla Butter Cake with Buttermilk Sauce

1. Prepare the Oven & Pan

  • Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F)
  • Grease and flour a baking dish (9×13 inch or similar)

2. Cream Butter & Sugar

  • In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (3–5 minutes)

3. Add Eggs

  • Add eggs one at a time
  • Beat well after each addition

4. Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In another bowl, whisk:
    • Flour
    • Baking powder
    • Baking soda
    • Salt

5. Combine Wet & Dry

  • Add dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk
  • Start and end with dry ingredients
  • Stir in vanilla extract

👉 Do not overmix—keep it tender.

6. Bake the Cake

  • Pour batter into prepared pan
  • Bake for 40–50 minutes
  • A toothpick should come out clean

7. Prepare the Buttermilk Sauce

While the cake bakes:

  • In a saucepan, combine:
    • Sugar
    • Butter
    • Buttermilk
  • Bring to a gentle boil
  • Remove from heat
  • Stir in vanilla and baking soda

👉 It will foam slightly—this is normal.

8. Soak the Cake

  • While cake is still warm, poke holes all over
  • Slowly pour warm sauce over the cake
