



The Crispy Pastry Shell
* 17.3 ounce box puff pastry sheets (thawed)


* Oil for frying

The Spiced Apple Filling
* 3 cups Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and diced)


* 2 tablespoons butter

* 6 tablespoons brown sugar


* 2 teaspoons cinnamon


* 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg


* 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

* 1 tablespoon cornstarch


The Sweet Coating & Serving
* 1/2 cup granulated sugar


* 2 teaspoons cinnamon


* Caramel sauce for serving (optional)


Instructions
1. Melt the 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat



2. Add the diced Granny Smith apples, brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves to the skillet





3. Cook the mixture for 5-8 minutes until the apples are tender and the juices are bubbling




4. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the apples and stir well to thicken the filling, then remove from heat to cool completely




5. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface and cut each sheet into 4 equal squares



6. Place a spoonful of the cooled apple filling onto the center of each pastry square




7. Fold the pastry over to form a triangle or rectangle and crimp the edges tightly with a fork to seal




8. Heat about 1 inch of oil in a heavy skillet to 175°C (350°F)




9. Carefully fry the pies for 2-3 minutes per side until they are puffed and deep golden brown





10. Remove the hot pies, immediately toss them in a mix of granulated sugar and the remaining 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, then serve with caramel sauce!
